Responding to Emotions in Cancer

Presented by Cancer Council Victoria, the Effective Cancer Communication (ECC) Program delivers best practice communication skills education to health professionals, non-clinical staff and volunteers. Effective communication fosters patient autonomy within health services and enables supportive relationships with cancer patients and their families.

Responding to Emotions in Cancer: This course has been developed for clinical staff and provides tools and language to build trusting relationships for better patient experience and health outcomes. The course provides the opportunity to:

  • Explore emotional reactions to cancer through experiential learning with simulated patients

  • Recognise emotions and apply frameworks to respond effectively

  • Receive feedback on personal communication challenges in a safe environment

Each workshop will include:

  • Program resources

  • One professional actor (simulated patient)

  • Two ECC facilitators provided by Cancer Council Victoria

  • Online delivery via Microsoft Teams

  • Certificate provided for each participant upon course completion

WORKSHOP DATES

Registrants will be required to choose one of the following options:

Workshop 1: Thursday, 25 July 2024 | 8:45am – 1pm (AEST) FULL

Workshop 2: Thursday, 19 September 2024 | 8:45am – 1pm (AEST) FULL

Workshop 3: Friday, 6 December 2024 | 8:45am – 1pm (AEDT) FULL

Registration

Priority will be given to 3rd-year Trainees to undertake this training in 2024 in order to complete their training requirements and take Fellowship. Registration is exclusive to Trainee MOGA Members. 

This training session is accredited by the Advanced Training Committee - Medical Oncology of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP). All Trainees who complete a training session are provided with a Certificate of Completion. Completion of this training program will fulfil the mandatory RACP training requirement for Australian medical oncology trainees and lead to a direct improvement in patient care and outcomes.

Booking fee

Participants will be required to pay an AUD$150 + GST non-refundable booking fee to secure their place on the workshop.

Cancellations

Participants are required to provide at least 72h notice, so that the registration can be allocated to another Trainee. 

No-show and late cancellations 

MOGA reserves the right to retain the booking fee to cover administrative costs.
